When her mother Wendy’s body was found in the Grand Canal in Phoenix, Arizona, in 2009, director Katherine Clary had few answers about what had brought about the tragic end to Wendy’s tumultuous life. Mining her mother’s letters and a rich archive of family photos, A Desert is an Ocean weaves an elegiac narrative about addiction, grief, and memory.
